2008 Gadsden Area Boys High School Golf Tournament

Looking out your window Tuesday morning, playing the Gadsden Area Boys High School Golf Tournament would be one of the last things you thought you would do. But, the storms passed, the clouds opened up to what turned out to be a great day on the golf course.

The tournament consist of the seven high school teams in Etowah County.  There is a team competition with each team having five players.  The four low scores count toward their team total.

The day saw many lead changes.  Players would play good and then run into a stretch of bad holes.  The outcome was in doubt until the final hole.  But in the end Glencoe High School, led by senior Jake Ford, clamed the championship trophy. The team made up of Ford, Zach Keener, Bradley McGuire, Ryan Stanley and Gabe Graves finished with a 330 total.  They were followed by Sardis High School with a 338 total.  Westbrook Christian was next with a 340, Gadsden City carded a 343, Southside finished with a 349, Etowah shot 366 and the young Hokes Bluff High School team had a 373. The team tournament saw a lot of young, first time participants shooting some good scores.

The Individual Championship turned into a real shoot-out that finally was won by Tanner Roberts from Gadsden City High School.  Tanner carded a two over par 74 to win by three strokes over Glencoe High School’s Jake Ford who shot a 77.  Tanner showed a lot of control when after starting with three bogeys on the first four holes, he rallied to shoot one under for the remaining fourteen holes.  He was challenged as other golfers would make a run at first place but find trouble and fall back.  Ford had a double bogey on a par five, Will Catanzaro found trouble on the final two holes to slip out of the lead.  The steady play earned Roberts him his first Championship.

After Roberts and Ford was Nick Thrower from Gadsden City High School with a 79.  Will Catanzaro from Westbrook Christian shot an 80, Logan Hubbard from Sardis High School had an 81 and at 82 were Zach Keener, Glencoe High and Riley Wilson Hokes Bluff High School.

The Gadsden Area Girls High School Golf Tournament will be played Thursday, April 10th at Twin Bridges.
