2008 Gadsden Area Girls High School Golf Tournament

Gadsden City High School wins the 2008 Gadsden Area Girls High School Golf Tournament by four strokes over a stubborn Glencoe High School girls team.

The Gadsden City team, made up of Amanda Richey, Becca Livingston and Danielle Hodge, finished with a 264 stroke total.  The scores were close most of the day, with the outcome in doubt until the last couple of holes.  The Glencoe team made up of Brittney Watkins, who had the low tournament score of 77, Ashleigh Smith, Whitney Gray and Brittany Weems  finished second with a 268 total.  Westbrook Christian High School, Lindy Newman, Madison Wrenn, Morgan Guyton and Katie Kilpatrick finished with 373 strokes.

The Individual Championship was won by Glencoe's Brittney Watkins with a solid round of 77.  Brittney is not the longest players, but she is one of the most accurate.  She never made a birdie all day,  but she also never made a large mistake.  Her front nine 39 and her back nine 38 scores  had nothing worse than a bogey.  This was the difference in the championship.

Ashleigh Whisenant (Etowah High School) was runner-up with a 79.  Ashleigh had the lead until a triple bogey on hole number 10 set her back.  Another double-bogey later in the round was more than she could overcome.

Gadsden City’s Amanda Richey and Becca Livingston both had solid rounds with Richey shooting 80 and Livingston an 81.  This was the closest competition in the Girls Championship in years, with four players finishing within four strokes of each other.

Also, in the individual competition Rebecca Russo (Etowah) finished with a 101, while Jerica Cox (Sardis High School) had 110.

The girls will be finishing their 2008 season and preparing for sectionals and state.
