Richey led Whisenant by four strokes heading to
Wednesday’s final round at Silver Lakes Golf Course. After nine holes
of play, Whisenant shaved one stroke off the lead, but both players
shot even-par 36 on the back nine to allow Richey to secure the win
with a three-day total of 229 to Whisenant’s 232.
Whisenant cut the lead to a single stroke late in
the round before Richey birdied the par-3 eighth to create some
breathing room.
Brittney Watkins was four shots back of Richey
entering the final round but closed with an 81 to finish 10 strokes
behind the winner.
On the boys side, Tanner Roberts was never
challenged, cruising to a 13-shot win.
Roberts, a rising senior at Gadsden City High,
carded an 83 for his worst round of the tournament, but was still able
to cruise to the win. Andrew McDonald was the closest finisher to
Roberts in the 16-18 boys division. McDonald shot a final-round 84 to
finish at 237, 18 shots behind Roberts.
Brett Garrard was second overall in the boys
division and first among the 13-15 boys. He matched Roberts’ 83 and
posted a three-day score of 232.
Cameron Dowling’s 73 and Trey Irwin’s 78 were
the lowest scores of the day in the boys division.
For golfers ages 7 to 12, play was held at
Wills Creek Golf Course and consisted of nine holes for each division.
In the girls 11-12 division, Ella Lawley shot
a 45 to win in a close battle with three others. Hope Bishop, Madison
Autwell and Madison Cole all finished within five shots of the lead.
Ellie Porter’s final-round 59 gave her the
title in 9-10 girls. Sydney Fairchild and Laura Lee Bowman finished
second and third, respectively.
The 7-8 girls winner was Lauren Cole, followed
by Savannah Hughes.
In boys 11-12 A-Division, Tee Brown’s three
day total of 130 bested Jack Sims by four shots and Jeff Ford by six
shots. In the B-Division, Trey Perry held off Andrew Lang, Cole
Fairley and Mason Reaves. The 9-10 boys had Ryan Sparks ahead of Kyle
Johnson, Seth Perry and Alex Cochran.
Tonight there will be an awards banquet at the
Gadsden Senior Activity Center. Friday, the top ten finishers in the
13-18 divisions will compete in the Champions Shoot-Out held at Silver
Lakes.
