2009 Gadsden Area Boys High School Golf Tournament Gadsden City’s Tanner Roberts fired a 3-under par 69 Tuesday to capture the individual title of the Boys Gadsden Area Golf Tournament, while the Southside Panthers took home the team championship. It was the second consecutive year Roberts claimed the individual crown. He bested Hokes Bluff’s Zach Contris and Glencoe’s Zach Kenner, who each shot a 5-over 77. Contris was awarded the runner-up trophy by a scorecard playoff. Windy conditions caused a great deal of trouble for many of the players. Club selection and ball striking was at a premium and Roberts was able to display both as he consistently kept the ball in the fairway, leading to several birdie opportunities. Roberts, Keener, Etowah’s Brett Garrard and Westbrook’s Will Catanzaro began play on hole 6. Roberts took the lead on the par 3 eighth by rolling in a long birdie putt. It was a lead he wouldn’t relinquish. Chris Jones led the way for Southside with a 79. Cliff Tucker pitched in with an 80 and Micheal Bolton fired an 82 to solidify the Panthers’ score. Gadsden City’s Nick Thrower shot an 83, while Andrew Spencer added an 84 to keep the Titans close behind. Other performances of note were Etowah’s Ashleigh Whisenant firing an 82, Jesse Force of Sardis carding an 86 and Glencoe’s Trey Irwin with an 87. Final team scores were Southside 326, Gadsden City 332, Etowah 346, Glencoe 347, Hokes Bluff 352, Sardis 360 and Westbrook 379. All teams will begin sectional play next week. 2009 GADSDEN AREA BOYS HIGH SCHOOL GOLF TOURNAMENT TEAMS
