2009 Gadsden Area Girls High School Golf Tournament

The 2009 Gadsden Area High Schools Girls Golf Tournament had to be one of the most exciting in years. The event, consisting of players from Gadsden City, Etowah, Glencoe and Westbrook Christian High Schools, saw a constant change in the leader board.

Last years winner Brittney Watkins (Glencoe High), was paired with last years runner-up, Ashleigh Whisenant (Etowah High), Amanda Richey (Gadsden City) and Danielle Hodge (Gadsden City).  The fireworks started early with both Ashleigh Whisenant and Amanda Richey birding the first hole. High grass on the forth hole cost Richey a double bogey and part of the lead but gave Brittney Watkins a chance to gain ground when she birdied. Things changed even more when leader Whisenant found hazard trouble and putting woes on holes 5 and 6, which led to a double and triple bogey.  After seven holes Brittney Watkins had established a two stroke lead.

Things changed quickly as putting problems on the fast greens cost everyone strokes.  Watkins bogeyed holes 8 and 9 to finish the front nine with a 38.  Richey hit into trouble on 9 and had a double bogey and a total of 40, the same score as Whisenant who fought back after her two disastrous holes. Danielle Hodge had a steady round and finished the front with a 43.

Whisenant got off to a good start on the back nine with a par and birdie.  This coupled with Watkins starting with two bogeys gave Whisenant the lead.  The pair were tied after 12 when Whisenant bogeyed.  Richey had worked her way back to being only one behind.  A double bogey on 14 by Richey, a couple of late bogeys by Watkins and the steady even par 36 by Whisenant on the back nine led her to the Championship.

Ashleigh Whisenant finished with a four over par 76.  Brittney Watkins was second with a 79.  Amanda Richey shot 81 and Danielle Hodge had an 85.

Gadsden City High School captured the team Championship with a total of 276.  The team was made up of Amanda Richey(81), Danielle Hodge(85), Leinin Schuerr(110) and Shelby Little(112).

Glencoe High School won second with a 294 total.  Team members were Brittney Watkins(79), Whitney Gray(102), Brittany Weems(113) and Jordyn Clowdus(115).

Other scores were Etowah’s Rebecca Russo (99),  Westbrook Christian High School’s, Lindy Newman (117) and Morgan Guyton (126).
