High School Golf Tournament

Twin Bridges Golf Course played host to the
Gadsden
Area Boys' Golf Tournament and saw Glencoe High School
capture the overall team title. The individual crown
came down to battle between Hokes Bluff teammates Zach
Contris and Riley Wilson. Contris won the title by
firing a four over par 76 to best Wilson's 77.
Glencoe's team title was just that - a team
effort. The Yellow Jackets were paced by sophomore
Christopher Tinker's 78. His steady play was
marked by 12 pars and 6 bogeys allowing him to finish only
two shots off the individual race in third
place. He was backed up by Tanner Dixon's
80, Reece Wagon's 85 and David Poovey's 86.
Their team total of 329 was eleven shots better than Hokes
Bluff.
The individual crown wasn't decided until the 18th
hole when Contris was able to make a par and Wilson
bogeyed to finish one shot off the pace. Contris and
defending champion Tanner Roberts of Gadsden City battled
stroke for stroke on the front nine. Contris
held a ones stroke lead until the ninth hole when he hit his
approach shot right of the green and had to work to make
bogey. Roberts rolled in a long birdie putt
to give a one over par 37 and a one stroke lead on
Contris. Roberts to be in control after a
birdie on the par five 11th. However, he failed
to make par on the next six holes and fell off the pace
and left the excitement up to Contris, Wilson and
Tinker.
Tinker saw his chances disappear when he
bogeyed 17 and 18. Wilson and Contris came down
to the last hole with Contris managing to make par and
Wilson had to settle for a bogey five. Contris, a
junior, was calm under the pressure of the last few holes
by making pars on five of the last six
holes.
Other individual scores of note were Cliff Tucker of
Southside and Ashleigh Whisenant of Etowah both firing
79's. Brett Garrard, also of Etowah had a fine
round and posted an 80. Defending 2A State
Champion of Westbrook had to overcome
a nine on the par five fifth to also shoot
an 80. Roberts and Jordan Hallmark of Sardis each shot
an 84.
Final team totals had Glencoe at 329, Hokes Bluff
340, Etowah 347, Gadsden City 357, Southside 359,
Sardis 363, and Westbrook 377. Regular season play
will continue throughout April until the sectional
tournaments begin the last week of
April.
