Etowah's Ashleigh Whisenant won the Gadsden Area
Girls High School Golf Tournament Thursday in record fashion, carding a
4-under-par 68 at Twin Bridges Golf Club for her second-straight
title.Whisenant, who won last year's champion-
ship with a 4-over 76, broke the tournament record
(73) set in 2007 by former Etowah and current Mississippi State golfer
Mallory Batson. En route to the record-low round, Whisenant recorded four
birdies and no bogies.
Whisenant's closest challenger in the individual
competition was Gadsden City's Amanda Richey. She shot a 76 for second
place, while Gadsden City's Danielle Hodge (82) was third and Glencoe's
Brittney Watkins (83) was fourth. Glencoe's Brittany Weems and Westbrook's
Jesse Lawley tied for fifth with 89s, while Hope Bishop recorded a 93 for
seventh place.
Watkins, Weems, Bishop and Whitney Gray led
Glencoe to the team title with a 265. Gadsden City, composed of Richey,
Hodge, Ryne Sheffield and Courtney Jenkins, recorded a 269 for second
place.
Westbrook Christian's Jesse Lawley, Ella Lawley,
Ali Porter and Katie Kilpatrick combined for a 320 and placed third.
Etowah's Rebecca Russo also participated and
carded a 102, while Southside's Reilly McGowan finished the day with a
107.
