Etowah's Ashleigh Whisenant won the Gadsden Area Girls High School Golf Tournament on Monday for the third straight year.

The senior fired a 3-under 69 with five birdies and two bogeys on what she described as a difficult day at Twin Bridges Golf Club in Gadsden.

“The wind was pretty rough all day long,” said Whisenant, who will be attending the University of Memphis to play golf in the fall. “The course was playing a lot tougher than it was last year. It wasn't an easy day at all.”

While Whisenant took home the individual title, Glencoe won the team championship with a three-person total of 268. Whitney Gray carded an 85 to lead the team and was second in the individual competition. Jordyn Clowdus finished with a 91 and Hope Bishop was at 92 for the Yellow Jackets.

Westbrook Christian finished second with a team total of 284. Jesse Lawley recorded a team-low 88, followed by Ella Lawley (97) and Ali Porter (99).

Southside came in third, finishing with a total of 353. Reilly McGowan was the low Panther with a 99, while Sarah Williams carded a 123 and Bailey Wise had a 131.

Glencoe coach Wes Weems said it was good for his team to get an 18-hole win.

“Our performance was very consistent,” Weems said. “It's basically what I've been looking for all season.”

The problem has been being able to play matches. Glencoe has played just four times and six matches have been rained out.

“We haven't been able to get into the rhythm of the season,” Weems said. “It's been tough for us. But now that we're starting to play a little bit, I'm feeling good about it.”

Whisenant is feeling good, too. She settled for a bogey on her third hole of the day, but birdied three of her last five holes Monday and nearly equaled her tournament-record round of 68 from a year ago.

“I settled down,” Whisenant said. “I played pretty steady until the end and just turned it up the last few holes.”

It was Whisenant's second tournament win of the season. She won the Grissom High School Invitational last month and will compete Friday in the Scottsboro Invitational.

“I hope I can just keep up the good play and then on to state,” she said.
